“Back to Grassroots” Programme

Back to Grassroots Programme

A successful example of our strategy to promote “engineering” in education is the “Back to Grassroots” programme that has now become a permanent feature of Siemens own educational support strategy.

Since 2008, AESSEAL® has provided Siemens Solid Edge CAD software into schools throughout the South Yorkshire region. Working with 45 schools the company has delivered training to more than 60 teachers and given lessons to 250 pupils. Recognising the value of this initiative, in 2013 Siemens effectively adopted the AESSEAL® scheme by providing the software licenses to schools free of charge. In addition, advancement in Siemens own online training, coupled with the teachers we trained becoming “the trainers”, the need for AESSEAL® to offer this close support has all but been eliminated (although it remains available if required).

Schools

Schools

In 2015 we had 3 school visits to the Global Technology Centre here in Rotherham welcoming more than 90 children that were given a plant tour and a talk about careers in engineering. We visited Maltby Academy and Brinsworth Comprehensive schools, presenting to over 60 pupils a talk about careers in engineering. In addition 13 school children have attended AESSEAL for either 1 or 2 weeks work experience. During their work experience visits the children typically spent time in a number of departments across the business helping them gain an appreciation for a variety of job roles.

AESSEAL® attended 4 regional full day events that targeted school pupils aimed at helping them make decisions with regards to future careers. Hundreds of children typically attend these events where interactive activities are used to introduce some of the principles of engineering in an interesting and fun way. Events attended included TeenTech, Get Up to Speed (GUTS), Rotherham Children’s Festival, and AMRC Careers fair.

Further Education

Further Education

We are working with a number of University students of specific projects, these include University Technical College Sheffield, Sheffield, and Sheffield Hallam Universities.

At Sheffield Hallam University we are supporting women in engineering with up to 4 bursaries and 2 post graduate sponsorships in this academic year. A total cost of these bursaries / sponsorships is £22,000 for 2016.

We currently employ 2 students on a one year work placement (1 in Marketing and 1 in Engineering).
