James Cropper manufactures some of the world’s most distinctive paper products, using materials ranging from cotton and wood pulp to carbon fibre. Established in 1845, the six generation family business is based at Burneside Mills on the fringes of the Lake District. Employing more than 500 people, the company has three divisions. James Cropper Paper makes luxury coloured papers serving industries ranging from fine art to luxury retail. Technical Fibre Products make advanced materials from carbon and other fibres, not least for use in composite aircraft, while James Cropper 3D Products – founded in 2016 – has developed high quality coloured moulded pulp to replace plastic packaging.

Apprenticeship programme attracts next generation of talent

James Cropper works closely with local schools and universities to attract the next generation of talent and for many years has operated an apprenticeship programme. Several apprentices are recruited each year into a range of disciplines from Engineering and Business Administration to IT and Marketing. We view apprenticeships as an essential way to introduce and nurture talent within our industry. Our apprentices regularly win regional and national awards and many continue their studies to degree-level; a number have been promoted to management and technical specialist roles. A career with James Cropper typically spans decades with over half our workforce spending more than 20 years with the company.
