Plessey GaN-on-Silicon technology can create LEDS with integrated components including drivers, sensors and primary optics that allow for smart lighting solutions. The product portfolio offers lighting OEMs the opportunity to differentiate with “game changing” fixture designs.

Plessey’s GaN-on-Silicon technology provides a 10x cost advantage and, when combined with the thermal performance, flexible form factor and chip scale optics, leads to 50% cost savings in the end application.

We are combining our expertise in the semiconductor industry with our design skills to create innovations such as:

  • Simplifying LED lighting module design and manufacture with compact beam forming technologies.
  • Creating horticultural lighting to ensure greenhouses are more productive for growers and enabling new forms of indoor, intensive and urban farming.
  • Providing sensing technology through EPIC™ – Electric Potential Integrated Circuit, used in a number of health and well-being applications.
  • Delivering human-centric spectral lighting innovations for 24/7 workers.

Industrial Cadets 2016

Plessey is part of the Industrial Cadets initiative which gives young people aged between 15-17 years, the opportunity to spend a week’s work experience at the company’s Plymouth manufacturing site. Three students took part in the scheme this year from a variety of local Plymouth schools and all achieved the Silver Framework Award, gaining a certificate and T-shirt to take home plus the ability to log on to the Industrial Cadets website and networking forum for future career opportunities, including apprenticeships, within their local industrial community.

Women in STEM

Plessey supported the Women in STEM Plymouth event held at Devonport High School for Girls, which aimed to showcase the range of career opportunities available locally to young women within the engineering and manufacturing sector. Girls aged 11-18 years were encouraged to come along and ask questions about what it is like to work within this exciting and innovative sector.

Manufacturing Schools Challenge

Plessey is taking part in the Manufacturing Schools Challenge in January 2017 and will be twinning with Devonport High School for Boys to offer a work shadowing opportunity for one of their teachers. Sponsored by Plymouth City Council’s City Deal, this event aims to showcase the range of careers available to young people within Plessey and thereby encourage closer associations between school and work. Plessey are also supporting the Plymouth Manufacturing Group Apprenticeship Fair, held at the Plymouth Guildhall, in March 2017 for the third successive year, joining local manufacturing companies offering apprenticeship opportunities to young people in the Plymouth commute to work area.
